The Dream Many people will deny the existence of the artist inside themselves or ask, Who cares? Why bother? For those most adamantly denying my assertion, please read on.
Why bother?
Let's look at the benefits to finding the artist inside in the first place. And for our purpose here the definition (to ourselves only) of the word "artist" must be defined for our benefit. Why else define it?
For the purpose of this site and my dream throughout, artist is one who creates anything pleasing or informative to the senses. Anything. First for oneself and then for the world.
For yourself - if you do any of the arts you already know.
For the world - like the tree falling in the forest with nobody around. Does it make a sound? Well of course it does. Recording devices can prove that. But why waste the sound in a deserted forest. Why waste your song in the shower? Why waste your poetry inside a spiral notebook that nobody sees and why waste your painting on a shelf?
Paintings, drawings, writings, sculpture, music, dance, etc..
Creating is right brain activity but......we live an a world mainly set up for the left brain by the left brain.
We need to fight back.
Most of the stress we feel is caused by expectations, timelines, schedules, etc. from the left side of our brain. Our world is scheduled by the left brain and checklists are written to accomplish work, by the left brain. Our entire education system is primarily left brained and mostly ignores the right side of the brain. When we create and are, at that moment, living in the right side of our brain, our concept of time is altered and we are actually living now as opposed to the calendar and checklist world we generally operate inside of. From my own experience, since I first recognized that I am an artist (after much resistance and denial I might add) I have had a great reduction of stress and have had a more positive and happy life. When my wife (Christine), an "artist" herself, suggested about seven years ago that I try art she was worried about my overload of stress. I was almost over the financial devastation of a divorce, my father was terminally ill and I was forced to work in a maximum security prison because a business I had started had failed. Originally I had this...I'm a macho tough guy and wouldn't paint to save my life. Well, I still can't paint but I discovered I can sculpt. At least to some degree and having something to improve on helps give my life more meaning. And I think it saved my life. My dream is to share what I have discovered and network with other artists who know they are artists and to encourage those who are but may not know it yet. My dream also includes helping to find what has been lost by most of us in the way of tribe . Common ground. One thing to consider...when an ancient civilization is found, what is sought and used to define the civilization? Art. And...what the hell is an "accomplished artist" anyway? Says who? What's the measure? Just be an artist and don't buy into society's ranking, filing and measurement. If you do art, any art...you accomplished art and you are then an accomplished artist. Duh.
